Leigh-Ann Brisbin remembers the conversation inside the operating room at Akron General Hospital the day her son was born. It was November 11, 2000, and the medical staff was chatting about what an honor it was to be born on Veterans Day. Today, Chris Brisbin, named after his father, has the distinction of turning 11 on 11-11-11.At the Brisbin home in Stow on a recent day, the birthday boy and his great-uncle Jack Price of Akron were nestled together examining old photographs taken when Price served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Chris leaned in to hear more details.Until recently, his family explained, Price hadn’t shared much about his days on the amphibious force. But that changed when Chris, who dressed as a soldier for Halloween, asked his uncle if he had anything left from the war.In response, Price, 88, wrote the boy a description of his sometimes harrowing adventures.“We noticed that our forward bilge pump [on a landing craft] was not working properly. I couldn’t reach it to clear because we had a jeep aboard, so the water began to accumulate and our crew started to get concerned,” he wrote. “It was still dark and a few long range shells fired from the French coast landed close enough to get our attention. We bobbed and circled with spray coming over the sides and soaking everyone, including the infantry guys fighting seasickness.”A couple of months ago, Chris’ room was decorated with a Batman theme. Now, with pictures and military toys, the room reflects his appreciation for the brave men and women who have fought for this country.“I’ve just always been interested in the military,” Chris said, shortly before being urged by his grandmother to recite the Preamble to the United States Constitution, something he learned at Stow’s Lakeview Elementary School, where he is a fifth-grader.In celebration of his 11-11-11 birthday, Chris is having a party that begins this evening at 6:11. After most of the partyers leave, 11 boys will be spending the night. The sleepover concludes at 11 a.m. Saturday.“Everybody thinks it’s pretty cool that my birthday is 11-11-11,” he said, with a chuckle. To give birth on Nov. 11, 2000, conception would have taken place, appropriately enough, on or around Valentine’s Day. Chris is one of 14 babies who were born in Akron hospitals on Nov. 11 that year. A good date, according to Tallmadge numerologist Gene Rowand.“Children who are born in the year 2000 are very intuitive,” said Rowand, who seems to have more knowledge jammed into his brain than the average brilliant guy. “Today, we are talking about 11-11-2011,” he explained. “If you look at it the way some people are looking at it, the number is 33 (adding 11-11-11 together). And 33 is the number of martyrs. It’s called the Jesus number — Jesus died at 33. And it’s about people who laid down their lives down their lives for the betterment of mankind. Today is Veterans Day.“And if you look at 11-11-2011, it adds to 35. And 35 is about the masses gaining equality, materially. And what’s going on right now? People are vying for their share of the pie.”Of course, if you’re the gambling kind, the number 11 is supposed to be lucky. And who isn’t looking to be lucky in love? Still, the date doesn’t seem to be as big for matrimony as 7-7-2007, which fell on a Saturday during wedding season.Reeves Cake Shop in Akron has two weddings today.“It’s not a tremendous amount, but we generally don’t have many on Fridays in November,” said Amanda Gragg, a decorator at the popular stop for engaged couples.Rowand noted that 11-11-11 is a day, numerologically speaking, of intuition, unity and harmony. Like having your 11th birthday today, it’s also a good date to get hitched.Kim Hone-McMahan can be reached at 330-996-3742 or kmcmahan@thebeaconjournal.com.
